Batch user input text example:

	@echo off

	Echo =============================================

	echo 	   User input example

	Echo =============================================

	set /p user_name=What is your user name:

	Echo Making Website ready version

	Echo %user_name% was what you typed

	pause

You may be saying, big deal, you can set a name. Well this can be a critical step in the creation of tools for any administrators automation kit.

Another example of this assumes that you are in an active directory enviroment. This tool will allow you to enter a users name and check that users account information without having to load the AD toolkit.

		
	@echo off

	net user %user% /domain

Example shown: Subtracting 1 year from today

Batch Subtracting 1 year from today example:

			@echo off

			echo Todays date is %date:~4,2%-%date:~7,2%-%date:~10,4%

			echo one year back...

			set /a yearback=%date:~10,4%-1

			Echo is  %date:~4,2%-%date:~7,2%-%yearback%

			pause

Here is what you can do with this. Say you have a "Junk" folder and you only want keep items for 1 year. Using the above method you can subtract a year in the batch file and then using the xcopy and delete commands copy all old files to a temp folder and delete them all. I have provided an example below of this.

		
	@echo off

	Echo #####################

	Echo This tool will move old files to a temp folder for review 

	Echo #####################

	set /a yearback=%date:~10,4%-1

	Xcopy C:\old_folder\* /s /d:%yearback%-%date:~7,2%-%date:~10,4% C:\review_folder\

	pause

	exit

Baed on search traffic, I notice that alot of people are looking for how to add and subtract using a batch script. This is actually really easy.

In the example below I am going to set a base number for the example and then add or increment up the value. You can copy the code below and save it as counting.bat

          @echo off

          set count=1

          set /a count=%count%+1

          echo %count%

          set /a count=%count%+1

          echo %count%

          set /a count=%count%+10

          echo %count%

          set /a count=%count%-1

          echo %count%

          pause
